Alghero is justifiably renowned for its fresh fish and seafood and this can be sampled at one of the many restaurants in the old town. With its Catalan history it is no surprise to find paella on some restaurant menus and another popular local specialty is lobster (aragosta). The general standard of cuisine in Alghero is high and as well as seafood encompasses a full range of other Sardinian favourites. Here is a short list of suggestions on places to eat. Bella Napoli Piazza Civica 29. As the name implies this is a Neapolitan restaurant / pizzeria situated just off Piazza Civica. Good, basic food at the cheaper end of the price range is served in the cool and relaxing high-vaulted dining room. Casablanca Via Principe Umberto 76 / Via Arduino. This popular restaurant / pizzeria has outside seating located in the piazza opposite. The low-vaulted dining room includes a non-smoking section. Al Vecchio Mulino Via Don Deroma 3. Tucked away in the centre of the old town the unassuming entrance to this inexpensive restaurant leads into a vaulted and atmospheric dining area. The staff are notably friendly here and the fairly limited menu is nonetheless of high quality. Pizza is also available. Palau Reial Via Sant Erasmo 14. Housed in the ground floor of a 15th century medieval palace this intimate dining room is full of character. A grill on the open fire is used to produce a selection of meat and fish dishes to old Sardinian recipes. Al Tugari Via Maiorca 113. The literal translation of this restaurant name is "hovel" which today is somewhat ironic given the attractive surroundings of the old building. Spread over three floors the menu contains high quality examples of current Mediterranean and Catalan influenced cuisine. Nettuno Via Maddalanetta 4. This restaurant / pizzeria has great views over the port from an outside balcony ( additional charge ) in addition to a roof terrace which is open in the summer. The location does mean higher than average prices.
