Alghero Sardinia Information

Getting There
The airport that serves Alghero is located around 10km away, just outside the town of Fertilia. Most visitors will probably hire cars for the duration of their holiday and all the usual hire chains are located opposite the customs exit in the main arrivals hall.
With many of the summer flight arrivals into the airport being tour operator charters it is likely that there will be a large number of people on a single flight all heading to the same car hire company. As such it can be a time saver for one member of the party to join the car hire queue and leave baggage collection to others.
By car, the route to the town is fairly straightforward but if travelling to accommodation within or beyond, it's important to have a map of the town. Street signposting on the whole is good but it can still be confusing to new arrivals.
For those you are relying on public transport there is a frequent local bus service run by FdS between the airport and Alghero. This is a cheap option with tickets costing about half a euro. Finally, the taxi rank can be found just outside the main arrivals hall with the journey costing around 20 and 25 euros.
Town Parking
Car parking is very limited in the town especially when the shops re-open in the early evening from about 5PM. Trying to find a space on the street can be somewhat stressful and it may be worth leaving vehicles just outside the old town. Approaching Alghero from the south, the Lungomare Dante road and from the north, Via Garibaldi are both only short walks to the old town and should be less congested.
Meters and ticket machines generally don't exist in Sardinia and where necessary payment is made to an attendant. This will normally
be up to one euro an hour. Cars are equipped with a small cardboard clock on the inside of the windscreen and in the event of the attendant being absent this should be set to the arrival time.
Tourist Office
A good starting point for any visit to Alghero is the main tourist office which is located on Via Sassari across from the Porta Terra end of the Giardini Pubblici.
Between April and September this is open from 8AM - 8PM, Mon - Sat and 8AM - 1PM on Sundays.
