In a straight line, Bosa is located some forty kilometres to the south of Alghero. As the only town on Nuoro's short western stretch of coast it makes an interesting one day trip.
High Road or Low Road
For those who travel to Bosa by car, from Alghero, there are two choices of road. The inland
route on the SP292 via Villanova Monteleone or the SP49 also known as the coast road. The former twists and turns up into the mountains and affords some superb views back to Alghero.
The latter more direct route, consists of mountains to one side and a drop to the glittering sea on the other.
The first section is well surfaced and its general emptiness and rewarding vistas give it the feel of "American road movie meets the Italian Job".
Another advantage of this route is the number of fine beaches dotted along its length. 8 km to the south of Alghero is the sandy beach at La Speranza which also has a snack-bar and restaurant. 5 km north of Bosa are some road side parking bays that give access to a number of small secluded sandy coves.
Main Town
Bosa is built 5 km inland on the River Temo which is the only navigable river in Sardinia. Its isolationist situation, ringed by mountains and sea, has protected it from tourist development and given the town a relaxed, laid back atmosphere.
Bosa is dominated by the hilltop remains of Castello Malaspina, the medieval fortress constructed by the powerful Malaspina family in 1112. In addition to its exterior walls and towers only the single church of Nostra Signora di Regnos Altos remains standing within although this contains some fine examples of Catalan style frescos dating back to the fourteenth century.
To the south of the Castle, on the north bank next to the bridge, is the Cathedral. This structure dates back to the fifteenth century although the exterior is from the more recent Baroque period. Inside, is a splendid interior of marble statues and nineteenth century frescos.
Bosa Marina
Bosa Marina is located at the mouth of the River Temo and this resort extension was once the site of the main town. Today it comprises of a deep and wide sandy beach overlooked by a Spanish watchtower and backed by a small number of hotels, restaurants and bars.
